A refugee during the Partition, who spent his early years in the camps, lost his sister to starvation, and finally left his poverty-stricken family at the age of sixteen and became a criminal, engaging himself actively in the Naxal movement, Manoranjan Byapari was taught to read Bengali in jail. As a rickshaw puller, a chance meeting with renowned author Mahasweta Devi changed the direction of his life and he became a writer and a Bangla Sahitya Akademi award-winner. He is an MLA for Trinamul from Balagarh. The book narrates his fascinating experiences, as well as his views as a Dalit writer on the struggles of underprivileged Dalits in Bengal.
